The once prolific fax machine is rarely seen these days. Just a few years ago the office appliance nested openly in nearly every corner of the office environment. It symbolized life at work. Now it is all but extinct.

It seems there are only two ecosystems left for for the fax machines habitat – the government and the Human Resources Department – and woe is us when we are forced to deal with the now unfamiliar species.

Tasks like filing for unemployment, making a change to your student l0an, and sending a W2 to an employer often require us to go hunting for one of those chirping old dinosaurs to dispatch a communication. It requires a dash to a drug store or Staples to pay 30 cents for the privilege or handing a friend an manila envelope to sneak in a fax at their office (”Please don’t look inside.”)

Dan Rosenberg Mckay, a career planner and author of Dawn’s Career Planning Blog on About.com offers a free and easy solution to living with the rare fax requests we encounter on the job search.

“MyFax Free lets you send two faxes, up to 10 pages each, a week for free. This could come in very handy when an employer asks you to fax your resume and you don’t have access to a fax machine. You don’t have to register to use the service or give a credit card number.”

She laments in a later post that the service isn’t as no strings attached as advertised, but the two-free faxes per week appears to hold true.
