What a Long, Strange Job Posting It Is

Univ. of California Santa Cruz is hiring an archivist to oversee it's Grateful Dead 'Dead Central' archive.

Univ. of California Santa Cruz is hiring an archivist to oversee "Dead Central" its Grateful Dead archive.

Deadheads and jam-band enthusiasts, hear this one out, man: Someone wants to pay you to listen to and organize the entire Grateful Dead archive… Far out.

The band bequeathed their entire anthology to the University of California at Santa Cruz and needs a full time archivist with a master’s degree to manage and oversee the entire Grateful Dead archive including overseeing “Dead Central” – a dedicated space in the newly renovated McHenry Library on the school’s campus. The archive is not limited to audio and video of the Grateful Dead; It also includes clippings, posters, documents, photographs and publications chronicling the band’s 44-year history, according to the UCSC job description. It will also include original artwork made by band members and fans.

“The Grateful Dead Archive documents the band’s creative activity and influence in contemporary music history from 1965 to 1995, including the phenomena of the Deadheads, the band’s extensive network of devoted fans, and the band’s highly unusual and successful musical business ventures,” said the job description.

One qualification desired: “Expert knowledge in the history and scholarship of contemporary popular music and American vernacular culture, preferably the history and influence of the Grateful Dead.”

The salary range for the Dead archivist is $52,860-$68,892 and the job is available for March 2010.

Potheads are in demand from employers,” jokes Steven Kurutz, in his Wall Street Journal blog, Speakeasy.

First, the Denver West Word put out requests for a marijuana critic and now a Deadhead archivist, paying a salary of $52,000-$68,000. How about a new professorship at Harvard to teach the “Cheech & Chong” film studies course as a companion to the university’s class on “The Wire”?
